Your location

Your location is sent to our servers to calculate aurora probability and viewing conditions specific to your location. It is used only for that calculation and is not stored or logged.

We do not track you, log your movements, or share your coordinates with third parties.

Public snapshot coordinates

When you log a field snapshot, the location attached to it is snapped to the centre of a grid cell before being displayed publicly. The grid spacing is 0.15° in both latitude and longitude.

At typical Australian and New Zealand latitudes (35-45°S) this means each cell is roughly:

  • 17 km tall (north-south)
  • 13 km wide (east-west)

The snapped coordinate can be at most about 11 km from your actual position (half the cell diagonal), so public snapshots cannot be used to pinpoint your exact physical location.

Your exact coordinates (at the time of the snapshot) are stored server-side with the snapshot record and used solely for aurora probability model training.
